About The Motherhood Project

 holistic wellness for moms

HOW WE GOT STARTED

Jen’s backstory -

After specializing in, and working with prenatal and postpartum women in the community for five+ years (after the births of my first two children), I started The Motherhood Project in 2019. I was on maternity leave with my youngest and third child, who was four months old at the time. The opportunity presented itself to go out on my own and create a similar environment to the one I was deeply passionate about working in, but with a more diverse and holistic approach. An approach that extends far beyond fitness.

After experiencing loss, trauma, and grief in my own motherhood journey, I felt motivated and compelled to provide other moms with the support, resources, and community they need and deserve. It was an opportunity to build something I wholeheartedly believe in and there was no turning back.

Assembling our team was a no brainer. I had spent my career working alongside and learning from these incredible women, mothers and leaders that now form the foundation of TMP. To my good fortune, they too share my passion for improving the quality of perinatal care in our community.

My deepest desire is to elevate the experience of mothering; not in the sense of making it “better” or “easier” but in the sense of making it more empowered, transparent, honest, vulnerable, compassionate, and connected.

Moms deserve to be cared for and learn how to care for themselves. The Motherhood Project is a space for all of that.

What we do differently

The Motherhood Project is so much more than fitness. We focus on holistic health and our programs cater to the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of the moms in our community. Our team has extensive, specialized training and a wealth of diverse education and experience behind us.

We’re dedicated to moms and we’re here to offer the highest caliber of service we possibly can.

We’re all about -

  • Supporting moms through the evolving needs of the different stages of motherhood – pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.

  • Providing holistic support – from birth prep to recovery, from fitness to yoga, mindset coaching, support groups and education opportunities.

  • Giving moms a place to feel connected, especially during the early stages of motherhood, which can feel isolating and unfamiliar.

  • Celebrating each woman’s unique motherhood journey.

  • Body positivity, inclusion, and creating a safe space for our members to BE.

  • Creating a place where moms can lean on one another for advice, tips, and shared experiences.

  • Sustainable, long term, wellness.

  • Empowerment.

  • Living a life you love.

We don’t believe in -

  • Diet culture.

  • Restriction and complicated rules.

  • Judgement. No topics are off the table!

  • Perfection. There is no such thing.

  • Going it alone.

“I can’t say enough positive things about The Motherhood Project. It’s not just about fitness but it’s a support system and as a new mom that is still struggling with PPD after the birth of my first, this was what I needed.”

Q + A with jen ⟶

Q: What is your favorite part of Motherhood?

A: Getting to know each of my children’s unique personalities over the years. They are so different from one another and have such different strengths and weaknesses. I find it fascinating that my husband and I made them!

Q: What is the most challenging part of motherhood for you?

A: I am a highly sensitive person (HSP) and I also struggle with anxiety so honestly, the overstimulation of it all. When the kids are all talking at the same time, when they are screaming, crying, playing loudly etc it can be really overwhelming

Q: If you could tell a new mom one thing you wish you had been told, what would it be?

A: Practice asking for and accepting help! You are not meant to do it all on your own. My friend and TMP trainer actually told me the following and I wish I had heard it before my first 2 children were born: Lower all your expectations. All of them. Such helpful advice when there is usually so much pressure to do more/it all!

Q: Why do you specialize in moms?

A: I have been through so much as a mother; pregnancy loss, perinatal mood disorder, c-sections, food allergies, plagiocephaly, sensory issues, breastfeeding challenges, pumping, hearing problems, picky eaters, marital lows, loss of adult friendships, carving out a new career, family boundary issues etc etc. What is crystal clear and has become the foundation on which The Motherhood Project stands is this; moms need community. Moms need connection. Moms need support. Moms need to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are not alone and they deserve a safe space that normalizes all the things that typically isolate. I could go on and on. It’s a great honour and a deep joy for me to have the opportunity to specialize in mothers and maternal wellness.

Q: What is your favorite part of Motherhood?

A: The first smile and laugh! Anytime they say a new word or show you a new skill, it’s the best!

Q: What is the most challenging part of motherhood for you?

A: Patience-slowing down to feed a baby or let a kid get themselves dressed etc.

Q: If you could tell a new mom one thing you wish you had been told, what would it be?

A: 1-Manage (lower) your expectations. Expectations of yourself, your house, your children, your spouse, your family. Lower them all! 2-Always start getting ready earlier than you think is necessary. There’s always a dirty diaper or feeding or looking for a toy that happens right when you need to leave.

Q: Why do you specialize in moms?

A: Moms put everyone else first and they need to learn to make themselves a priority. I’m here for the moms!

Q:Briefly describe your teaching style and what you currently teach for TMP?

A: Power Hour-online and soon, outdoors! My style is all about balance, Cardio, strength and core with some barre infused elements as well.

Q + A With Kerri ⟶

Q: What is your favorite part of Motherhood?

A: Watching them and witnessing their sheer joy for the simple things in life. They remind me of what is truly important.

Q: What is the most challenging part of motherhood for you?

A: It was a long journey for me to become a mother including recurrent pregnancy loss, scares with both babies along the way and my son arriving at 29 weeks. So, for me, I feel like a lot of the challenge was the lead up. That said, motherhood has been the most challenging and most rewarding part of my life so far. The general anxiety and stress of becoming a new mom with my daughter, the PTSD I suffered from my son's traumatic birth, and our 10 week NICU stay; all very challenging. OH and my babies being 15 months apart!

Q: If you could tell a new mom 1 thing you wish you had been told, what would it be?

A: 1-Nothing ever goes exactly as planned

2-Remind yourself that no matter what “gets done” in a day, you did your best and that is enough!

3-Try to enjoy this precious time. It flies by and they grow too fast!

Q: Why do you specialize in moms?

A: Being a new mom can be isolating and what The Motherhood Project gave me as a student was a deep sense of community. I’ve made some of my closest friends attending classes with my little ones. I want to help give back to the moms in our community through my experiences with motherhood and as a yoga teacher.

Q:Briefly describe your teaching style and what you currently teach for TMP?

A: I teach Yoga and Barre. My teaching style is clear and alignment based, ensuring accessibility and safety for everyone. You can expect breath work, relaxation techniques, stretch and strength, with a few laughs along the way.

Q: What is your favorite part of Motherhood?

A: My favorite memories as a child were the adventures my mom would take me on. My favorite part of Motherhood is making memories with my littles; adventuring from weekend hikes, trips to our family cabin to staying up until 1am hopped up on hot choclate watching meteor showers...even though I always regret it the next day!

Q: What is the most challenging part of motherhood for you?

A: Learning how to parent my littles differently for their individual needs.

Q: If you could tell a new mom 1 thing you wish you had been told, what would it be?

A: Before I had kids, no one told me how hard breastfeeding could be. You go to the classes they teach you about latching etc but there was so much more to it then I had anticipated. I felt like a failure that my babies didn't latch properly and that I had to pump and bottle feed. Even though we eventually figured it out and got in our groove, please remember fed is best.

Q: Why do you specialize in moms?

A: I was very physically active before having kids but after having my first and giving birth to what I would say a toddler, I was told at my check up that I had abdominal separation. I didn't think I could continue working out after my first which affected me both physically and mentally. After my second I knew I had to make some changes. I felt lost after taking multiple classes, feeling overwhelmed and not understood. Then I found Jen, the founder of The Motherhood Project, not only did she teach me how to listen to my body and how to work out safely but I found my love of fitness again. 7 years later here I am, hoping to help moms the way Jen helped me.

Q: Briefly describe your teaching style and what you currently teach for TMP?

A: I teach a Power Hour class which focuses on a mix of cardio and strength while including modifications for any level!

In the new year I will be introducing strength and core classes to TMP which will focus on more strength and resistance training using proper form to safely increase lean muscle mass, core connection and stablity. I also offer 1:1 Personal Training.

Q: What is your favorite part of Motherhood?

A: Being their whole world as they are mine. I love teaching my daughter and seeing her experience all the firsts in life. Seeing her grow into her personality ans how she runs up to me to give me a big hug! When I look at her and smile and she smiles back, it's just the best!

Q: What is the most challenging part of motherhood for you?

A: The most challegning part of motherhood for me, so far, has been seeing my daughter in pain or when she gets hurt. She just recently was stung by a wasp; she cried for about 2 mintues and I think I cried for an hour :(

Q: If you could tell a new mom 1 thing you wish you had been told, what would it be?

A: It is ok to NOT do it all and to ask for help! I struggled with this as I like to be in control and have everything on my todo list checked off for the day, but I've learned to let go and it's so much better once you do! It is also important to take time for yourself!

Q: Why do you specialize in moms?

A: Moms are very special people; it is crucial we stick together! I love connecting and sharing my experiences as a mom with other moms and love listening to other's journeys. We are in this together!

Q: Briefly describe your teaching style and what you currently teach for TMP?

A: I will be teaching both indoor and outdoor Power Hour which is a well balanced class of cardio, strength and core. Modifications and progressions are offered which makes this class truly suitable for all levels!

I teach with a lot of energy and passion, love a good mix of strength training, plyometrics and cardio.

My certifications are diverse which allows me to bring expereince from an array of modalities which keeps things fresh and never boring!

Q: What is your favorite part of Motherhood?

A: There are too many things! But my favorite so far would be seeing them learn and master a new skill and then smile at you so proudly. Oh! And the cuddles!!

Q: What is the most challenging part of motherhood for you?

A: Finding a balance in everyday life. Learning to have some "me" time even if that means letting certain things wait such as the laundry/cleaning.

Q: If you could tell a new mom 1 thing you wish you had been told, what would it be?

A: I was told this by a few people, but I wish I really took it in even more than I did. Enjoy each stage as it is. Soak in those baby cuddles as that stage really doesn’t last long.

Q: Why do you specialize in moms?

A: It is incredible what our bodies go through during and after a pregnancy. We are so focused on caring for our little ones that we often don’t care for ourselves as much as we should! I love that I get to be apart of your selfcare and hopefully make you feel strong and empowered. I also have personally met some amazing moms and friends myself attending TMP classes and I love that I get to be a part of that connection for you!

Q: Briefly describe your teaching style and what you currently teach for TMP?

A: I like to keep things interesting by using multiple different forms of equipment, trying to keep a workout fresh and engaging. With a lean towards strength training, but also incorporating cardio, core, and functional training. I love to give you the push, while meeting you where you are currently at in your fitness journey. No matter what level you are at, I will find the right balance to leave you feeling amazing after a workout and having fun during!
